It seems so simple. If we want to lose weight, why don't we just stop eating? Or at the very least, limit what we eat to mega-healthy stuff like raw veggies. But it's not that easy. We need to diet slowly or we incur negative side effects that will outweigh the quick loss of weight, a starvation diet brings about.
One thing you will always find with diets that promise fast weight loss - testimonials. The letters and the pictures from people who feel wonderful after going on the diet. What we don't see much of is stories of the stress and illness caused by drastic dieting. The people who die or get sick don't seem to want to bother writing letters so we hear from very few of them. You can find videos on YouTube giving one side or the other about a diet or weight loss product but often the person posting the video has some kind of vested interest.
The bottom line is do not go on a diet that advertises fast weight loss unless you talk to your doctor first. Many people develop serious health problems because they think that they are the best judge of what to do about losing weight. Reality often bites in the shape of heart problems, anorexia or a stroke.
You can try low carb diets, low protein diets or detox fasts; the bottom line is that maintaining a safe and healthy weight means lifelong effort - not a knee jerk reaction to a period of self indulgence. A healthy diet is what is needed.
A healthy diet is made up of meat, veggies, bread, potatoes, fiber and fruit. And exercise and water. The aim is to meet a healthy weight and to keep it.
Fasting is more of a permanent solution for weight loss. But it's hard work.
